Great start! I agree with the others.. I think it may help to make the photo a bit bigger and the title a bit smaller, but so far so good! Isn't it addicting?!

Thanks everyone for the comments, tips and tricks. Can someone give me or show me a good example of a focal point?

I agree about the colours in the frame, Angela, they don't really "go" with the colours in the rest of the layout. And I personally think that the title is too big, it seems to overpower the whole page. I really like the layered paper background, though, and the tree and the mouse look cute together. What the others have said about a focal point makes a lot of sense, too. I think the basics of the layout are good, it just needs a bit of tweaking to make it great!

Awesomeness for posting your very first layout. I don't think I even have my first layout anymore. Lol. Critique: I agree with Marisa, you want to have a clear "focal" point in your page. You can have things grouped to do that, or have some type of "white" space to do that, or movement across your page that will carry the eye to the "focal" point. I agree about the colors of the frame too. Also, if you want some journaling to help tell the story, and document the photo or at least a date. I have so many layouts that I have to go back and re-do now since I never journaled or added dates too!! :)

Congrats on your first layout! One tip I'd suggest going forward is to think about creating empty space and groups of items, instead of just spacing things out across the page. This helps create a focal point for people to know where to look. But you're off to a great start! I love the layering of the papers in the background.

You had asked for critique in the thread, so ... Well, you're doing it right! lol The tree and mouse look cute on the bottom left. The only thing I, personally, would've done differently is the frame. For me, the colors clash with the rest of the layout. If you still have the file in multiple layers, try going back and redoing the frame in white, red, and green. Or, look through The Nutcracker blog train thread and find a kit with a rectangular frame that would go with your layout.
