Scenes from the Office: Breakfast
I realize now that my title may have been misleading as I'm not going to discuss the famous TV show, but rather my own personal office. Hopefully that's not too disappointing for you.
Some of you may be blessed by working from home, but some of you may not realize entirely what this means. Jordan and I recently joined a Meetup group in our town for home-internet business owners. At this group we talk about the difficulties of working from home: seeming like a crazy person to everyone you meet in real life, and being isolated most days from these real life people who will likely find you somewhat strange after a little conversation.
This is all a lead up for me to contradict myself because my life desire is to never leave my home office. I could spend a few paragraphs explaining all the perks, but instead I will share a little behind the scenes.
In the morning I wake up and have a little quiet time with my tea, and then make my way to the computer with my breakfast to check in with email and the forums and then to decide where to go from there. My Todoist account keeps me generally on track. Although, sometimes the fact that my office is almost in the kitchen leads to a few distractions.
I usually eat yogurt and granola for breakfast. But it's Friday and Jordan was eating something "unusual" (aka Raisin Bran, which inspired me both not to eat yogurt or Raisin Bran). I remembered that we had a bit of pancake mix left and there was no going back. What's the point of working from home if you can't have pancakes when you feel like it? As previously mentioned, the kitchen is more or less the same room as the office, so I can have a "work meeting" with Jordan while making pancakes. Here's what we talked about this morning:
Marisa: Should I use chocolate chips or mini chocolate chips?
Jordan: (unhelpful stare as he contemplates why we have both.)
Marisa: I love America! (These are my first chocolate chip pancakes in a very long time. Chocolate chips of any size can be hard to come by overseas.)
Jordan: I just saw on Facebook that there was another program in Japan about how Americans are fat.
Needless to say I took that as a personal insult and did not give Jordan any pancakes. They were delicious.

About Me
Hi There! I’m Marisa Lerin and you’ll see me around at DigitalScrapbook.com a lot. I started this site in 2010 soon after I discovered a new love in digital scrapbooking. DigitalScrapbook.com has gone through some significant changes since that time and it’s grown into this lovely community site you are seeing now. I am daily surprised by the turn of life’s events that has led me down this path. If you're new to the site, welcome! Here are a few tidbits about me that I hope will help you get to know me better!
I’m originally from Minnesota, USA, but spent a good chunk of my childhood living abroad (in Bolivia and Hong Kong). I returned to Minnesota to attend university, got married and then moved overseas again (Korea, then Jordan and 1 year of traveling). My designs are heavily influenced by these many nomadic years. I am currently back in the USA, now living in the great state of Oregon!
I have no official training for what I’m doing, since I decided very wisely (haha) to study physics in university. I am always learning new things about digital scrapbooking, and this community has been immensely helpful for that!
If I manage to stop digital scrapbooking you will probably find me watching TV, reading or baking. I also enjoy writing for the blog here at DigitalScrapbook.com where I talk about whatever happens to be catching my fancy at the moment.

Yummy, you can share your pancakes with me. I love plain or blueberry pc's the best with just a little butter and rolled up eating them with no utensils.
We worked outside our home, but my darling and I worked side by side for years. We complete one another and it is fabulous! I would not have changed, spending my days and nights with this darling human being for anything. I can only hope that you can say that now and after 50 years of marriage.
Another photo comment... If you look hard at the 'view of your office from the kitchen' the plant on the left, forward of your husband gives the appearance that your husband has a very funny, crab-shaped, green mustache. It's rather funny. :-)
For 11 years, I had everyone in the family in the home...the last almost 4 years, just me and the dog...almost all the time. But Our Family loved it while it lasted. Home Office, Home Schooling, set your own pace, monitor and motivate. I've noticed one thing though, that lately my sense of the passage of time, I used to have the best internal clock, has disappeared ALL together! So I frequently find myself surprised when someone comes racing through to change and head to work, or my daughter away at school calls, usually at the same time of day. I really need to find a timer that really works for me. If I don't have the tv on but have lectures or debates on I can't tell how much time is passing. I LOVE being able to set my pace, and it's always a been a busy one!
I am glad I'm not working from home, my kitchen is right next to my computer and I have no backbone when it comes to pancakes... Poor Jordan, he must be glad he already had some raisin brans or he would starve, sitting right next to your delicious smelling pancakes. Lesson learned I hope, Jordan?
The way you explained working from home is SO perfect. "seeming like a crazy person to everyone you meet in real life, and being isolated most days from these real life people who will likely find you somewhat strange after a little conversation." This is my life to a T! I feel so isolated and people don't understand why when I am home, I can't just drop everything and go out with them. Even with a flexible schedule! :) So glad it is not just me! Somehow makes me feel better! And those pancakes look amazing! :)
I love what you did on your wall using the purses for decorating, what an genius idea. You two seem very compatible with a sprinkle of humor thrown in and I'm glad you share your thoughts with us. Glad to see you had something hot to eat for breakfast. I love pancakes to, especially with strawberries and whipped cream on top. I am a Graphic designer partly retired and I love how Jordan and you manage this site.
Two words... it's difficult. In my world, there is only one person that understands that what I do is working. lol Even today my husband came in and asked me if I was done playing on my computer. The playing I was doing was listing about 100+ kits into my newly constructed online web store (after the last one absolutely crashed). I lost all of my customer data, purchase history, etc. Needless to say, I don't consider it playing when I am up to my eyeballs loading kits back into my store one by grueling one.... lol John wouldn't get any pancakes either! xoxox Beth
You two are too funny! LOL (remind me of me & my hubby)
Haha. I do not work at home but I long for the day. I guess it would take a lot of discipline though.
Poor Jordan - first he had no pancakes. Then, you´re all moking him about his green beard :) He´s a nice guy, you know ;)
There is probably ways to find chocolate chips in my town, but it´s not something you easily find on the closest supermarket. What we do find easily are chocolate sprinkles - those goes in some traditional brazilian recipies - but it´s definitelly not the same of american chocolate chips...
I've been working at home for a financial services company for almost a year now. For the most part I love it! My husband travels a lot and being home makes it so much easier for me! My son's school is literally right across the street so I'm able to walk him to school in the morning and pick him up in the afternoon. As for chocolate chips, I have both regular and mini in my freezer right now :-).
I love the green mustache - Jordan, it looks on you! Marisa, not sure if I would EVER give him any pancakes.
Your post has me thinking that the 2 of you are very compatible, to be able to live and work so closely together and not get on each others' nerves. I have to confess that since we both retired I find myself looking for things for him to do outside the house! His golfing buddies are very jealous of him because I insist that he play at least a couple of times a week!
I work both from home and out of home, and I can definitely see the pros and cons for both. The main con working from home is that my clients know where I live, and I need to keep the house very clean (which is hard, as it's open plan.)
The cons of working out are that I can't snack, refill my water easily, and I can't sleep in a little, or do odd-jobs between students, like pegging out the washing :P
I also used to work from home certain days. I am now retired. Wonderful advantages. Cat on lap with his paws on the desk trying to help :) Tea or baking cooking while I kept working. Part of the time when we home schooled the children, we had a business where the kids came with. Out the back was set up with bed, kitchen etc. A few of the perks of home business came with.
I also love the picture with the green mustache! I think that working and living together can be very hard sometimes and then you get funny conversations about pancakes! :) They look delicious!
Lol! Glad you kept the pancakes to yourself ;-) I love your collection of purses - are they beaded?
That plant giving Jordan a funny mustache was the first thing I saw too!...LOL! I also work at home, very close to the kitchen, so I know what you mean Marisa! I feel I constantly keep going to the kitchen to fetch a warm cup of tea (and now I start to wonder how many liters of tea I actually drink a day haha.... must be quite a number!). Sometimes it's a bit difficult to focus on work all the time (and not to click on the Photoshop button and start scrapping), but I do love the comfort of working at home. One of the perks is that I can work according to my own schedule, so I'm very flexible in my time and because of this I am able to make time for the nice things in life when it suits me. :)
LOL! I love this! :D
I think the last time I had pancakes was when my kids were still home ... they are now in their late 30's so that must be about 10 years. I'd rather have French toast but haven't had that either. I always served them with real maple syrup ... Ottawa Valley is known for the best maple syrup anywhere .... and fresh or frozen fruit. Okay ... now you have me wishing I had pancakes and that means I have to go out and buy a frying pan .... gave my old pans away when I moved last year lol ..... I do have chocolate chips though ... deep dark chocolate ... I make a yeast bread with walnuts, dark cocoa and the dark chocolate chips for Christmas and Easter holidays ... it is soooo gooood.
I agree, one must have CHOCOLATE CHIPS at their disposal!!!!! And yes, Jordan would not have gotten any of those yummy pancakes.
Are you serious Lorien? You don't have chocolate chips? What is this world coming to? :-) I have been out of the office-office also-- for nearly 3 years now-- and I wouldn't change it for anything either. Making time to "get out" in adult groups either for fun or professional networking helps a lot. And I wouldn't have given Jordan any pancakes either, Marisa. (Sorry Jordan... just sayin'...)
And that little plant gives Jordan a funny mustache...LOL!
LOL! Oh I feel the pains and joys of working from home! Working on my 6th year out of the office-office and can say I would not trade it for anything. Though it does tend to get lonely for [adult] conversation at times, at least you and Jordan have each other. I have two 5 yr olds and a cockatiel as my convo partners for most of the day haha!
<-- Doesn´t have chocolate chips, as she´s not at America. Apart of that, our morning routines are almost the same.
