Scrapbooking peaked my interest for years. Last April I became the proud grandaunt of the most adorable baby girl. My goal is to complete a photo book for her by her first birthday to give to here when I visit her again in Germany.

What did you use to white her name?
Good point Lorien, you're using the "Rule of Thirds" and odds - the triangle around the photo. Groups of 3, or 5 items...etc are more common in nature and so look pleasing in design.
I love your matting technique Christine, something I usually have troubles remembering to do.
I like this layout. It´s cute and your grandniece´s picture is great. However, it´s so disperse, in a way you don´t know what to look first. I like the kind of background composition you did (two papers and a lace to mark the division) and I use it a lot in digiscrap, as I used in paper scrap before that. However, I´d push this division line down, so the pink paper started around the third horizontal half of the page, and align the journal card to the lace too, like you did with the picture. Then, I´d put her name in a horizontal line. This would make the layout become horizontalised and it helps to focus the attention of the viewer. I love the bird carrying the baby, but I´d put it on the top of the photo, in the way you did with the giraffe, but in the opposite corner, making it just a little smaller, so it occupies the white blanket space. Then, if you take one of the safety pins, you´d have a visual triangle around the photo - it´s another instrument to subconsciously make the peope look to the photo first, making it become the focal point. The stitched border placement looks awesome in your layout. Please don´t feel intimidated by my critisicm, your layout is already great if you live it as is. And, definitelly, far better than my first ones.

All the way around - do you mean all around each element or photo? Do you layer the smaller shadow on top of the bigger one?

I think this composition is fine, and would wait for journaling of mom on another page. I'd suggest a few more shadowings perhaps. I tend to shadow things all the way around, in GIMP. With a main shadow of something like offset x and y of 7 and blur radius 12 and a 80% opacity...then I do smaller shadowings in the other "quadrants"...of a smaller size...-3, -3, blur of 7 and opacity only 30%, as these are minor and somewhat overlap. Hopefully this makes sense. I don't know what program you use.
But I've found that the shadowing can really put those finishing enhancements on a digital layout.
