Capturing Big Moments in Your Pocket Pages

Pocket page scrapbooking is perfect for every day moments. I love how I can combine all the disparate photos from the week and put them in one place without too much effort. And I think this aspect of using pocket pages is well established (you can read more about my own personal process here). However, I thought I'd bring attention today to the fact that I capture big moments in my pocket pages as well. While the pockets work great for keeping unrelated photos a little separate, you can also use the same pocket template to relate photos from the same time together. And the biggest consideration for me is sticking with a routine that works. If I had to suddenly switch things up and make a regular layout for a certain event or photo I really loved, I'd never finish my book for the year.

Here are some examples throughout my years of pocket scrapping. Sometimes the event takes up the whole spread, and sometimes it's mixed in with the rest of the week. Pocket scrapping is great for its flexibility and getting in a lot of photos.

This is my spread from Christmas this year. The right side has photos from Christmas day, and the left side has photos from the rest of the week.

Iona's birth is here too. Sometimes for a very large event I'll take two spreads to get in all the pages I want. I do this rarely as I try to get the whole year to fit on 100 pages. These pages cover the days right before her birth, our time at the hospital and coming home.

I even include our travels in my pocket pages. Sometimes it's just a little taste and I'll make a second book with all the photos. But frankly in a lot of cases all the travel photos just end up in my weekly pages.

These photos from a trip to Jordan a few years ago are just here in our 2016 book.

While these photos from our trip to Kenya just give a little taste from that week and I created a separate book for this trip (see details here).

This road trip we took in 2016 also exists only in my weekly pages. Having these photos scrapped somewhere takes off a lot of the pressure of making a special book. I obviously can if I want to, but in the meantime I can still enjoy these photos in this book right now.

I like the metaphorical idea behind including "smaller" everyday moments with the less frequent but memorable "big" occasions. Having my most recent teacup photo rubbing shoulders with photos from a trip of a lifetime equates their importance in a way that's easy to miss as I'm going through life.

Anyone else have some deep scrapbooking philosophy they'd like to share?

I really love your process and style Marisa. I am going to think thru my processes which aren't working well and incorporate some of yours. Thanks so much for the inspiration!
