A Year On The Road: Afterword
After 11 months on the road, living out of our trusty mini van, we’ve finally arrived back home. Our journey began with no particular plan—we simply left our driveway and started driving north.
In those 11 months, we managed to visit 33 states and 2 countries. We slept in over 70 different beds, which included more than 40 nights in hotels, numerous camping spots, and stays at the homes of over 20 friends and family members across the country. We also had the pleasure of experiencing longer-term stays in three different AirBnBs. Each new bed came with its own set of memories, from cozy hotel rooms to rustic camping sites under the stars.
Our adventure took us to many iconic and lesser-known places. We swam in countless hotel pools, providing the kids with endless fun and a chance to burn off some energy. Neighborhood playgrounds became our frequent stops, and I was impressed after time that no playground felt like a repetition of one we had previously visited.
We even managed to squeeze in visits to popular tourist sites like the majestic Niagara Falls.
A highlight for me was experiencing fall after many years living in places without distinct seasons. This was my kids first fall experience so that made it extra special as well.
We took a break from our mini van and flew to Amman, Jordan for Christmas to be with Jordan's family.
Magnus's favorite place was Rochester, NY with the Eerie Canal and the Strong Museum.
We escaped the winter to Arizona and enjoyed lots of sun and scootering.
We spent the spring in Minnesota, spending time with family and friends and then drove back to our home in Oregon. Summing up an experience like this is challenging. It was a unique and unforgettable adventure that brought us closer as a family and allowed us to create memories that will last a lifetime. It was really special to be able to spend so much time with family and visit friends we hadn't seen for a long time. While I'm looking forward to sleeping in less beds in the coming year, I know the adventure isn't over.

About Me
Hi There! I’m Marisa Lerin and you’ll see me around at DigitalScrapbook.com a lot. I started this site in 2010 soon after I discovered a new love in digital scrapbooking. DigitalScrapbook.com has gone through some significant changes since that time and it’s grown into this lovely community site you are seeing now. I am daily surprised by the turn of life’s events that has led me down this path. If you're new to the site, welcome! Here are a few tidbits about me that I hope will help you get to know me better!
I’m originally from Minnesota, USA, but spent a good chunk of my childhood living abroad (in Bolivia and Hong Kong). I returned to Minnesota to attend university, got married and then moved overseas again (Korea, then Jordan and 1 year of traveling). My designs are heavily influenced by these many nomadic years. My family was living in Mexico, but now we are spending a year in Norway, which will be followed by a move to the UK.
I have no official training for what I’m doing, since I decided very wisely (haha) to study physics in university. I am always learning new things about digital scrapbooking, and this community has been immensely helpful for that!
If I manage to stop digital scrapbooking you will probably find me watching TV, reading or baking. I also enjoy writing for the blog here at DigitalScrapbook.com where I talk about whatever happens to be catching my fancy at the moment.

It seems to be a very good experience to travel with your children.
I hope that everything goes well and that you settle in your new country smoothly. Thank you for being with us and from the bottom of my heart I hope this site continues to exist in the internet space :)
Enjoy reading your experiences.
Wow, this was a fantastic traveling for all this family!❤️❤️❤️
amazing! Terrific family memories.
Wow, what a great adventure. This is something you'll never forget
So much fun to spend this journey with the ones you love
So amazing!! I’m so inspired. This is the time to do it with your kiddos…it gets a lot more complicated to it an adventure of this magnitude when they get older. Just a lifetime of great memories. I loved following along in social media…
I've enjoyed reading about your adventures with your family here and on IG. Such amazing experiences for you two and the kiddos. Love your free spirit, too!
Oh wow! I love your spontaneity and adventurous spirit - something that, I’m sure, has been passed onto your kids. This 11 months defines adventure(s) of a lifetime. So amazing that you took the time to do this with family. I can imagine doing this with my husband but with 3 kids as well? You guys are inspiring. Just wow.
Such an amazing journey for your family! Stunning photos! I envy you and your family's experiences over the last year.
Oh! Then that's fine. And what an experience for them!
Thanks everyone!
@Chitra: Magnus is in kindergarten and Iona is in preschool, so there's not a lot of learning that requires internet for them. It's more experiential.
Your travels have been far more adventurous than ours! :D Looks like it was a great time! Glad you all (and the van) survived!
What an amazing adventure you've had!
This sounds like the trip of a lifetime! Thanks for sharing the highlights with us.
Wow!!! It's a very beautiful experience with your family!
Beautiful photos !
Wow! Great family adventure, i love the photos!
Wow! This is the kind of adventure I hope to someday be able to give my mini me.
What an experience you've given your kids! They would have learnt far more from this trip than they would have cooped up in a class room!! I have a doubt though, what about the children's studies? Were you homeschooling them while on the road? If so, the internet connection must have been exceptional! This type of adventure is something I dream of but wouldn't take on...but I am inawe of people like you who do...!
Wow, what an immense adventure and the memories it must have created! I imagine it's not easy to transition back to everyday life after such an experience. Thank you for sharing it with us.
