Scraptorial - Make-A-Kit Extravaganza (Day 7 - TAGs - You're it!)

smiley One week down and three to go, but it is not too late to start making a kit with us. If you haven't read Day One's post about this challenge (it contains all the details for how to participate) please do so, it can be found here. Please feel free to dive right in. We welcome anyone and everyone who wants to join us! smiley

  • Page One

  • Page Two

  • Page Three

  • Page Four

  • Zip The zip contains the pages for the Scraptorial which are "recipes" and "ingredients" for the samples I made, plus all six example tags just in case you want to get a better look at them. (Fair Warning: I am one of those cooks who can never make the same dish twice because I use a "snickle" of this and a "dash" of that, or I am constantly thinking, "ooooooooooh, what if I try this and see what happens?" And I have the same exact approach when I am designing in Photoshop, so if you have questions about the sketchy recipes or shady ingredients I used, ask away! I shall do my best to clarify.) smiley

    Where to Find Tag Resources

    • Right here on DigitalScrapbook.com. I went to the Graphics tab, ticked "Templates" and "Tag" and was rewarded with 27 pages of choices. Snag the CU version if you want to share your kit with others when you are done.

    • On CreativeFabrica.com. I searched "Tag Templates." If you only want "Freebies" make sure that is ticked in the search menu at the left side of the page. Lots of free and low-cost options and they are all CU.

    • Our very own Robyn Denton has a CU set of tags at her Dancing Tiger Designs blog that are super neat. (Thank you, Robyn. I had to have them for my stash.) The Google Drive link is right below the preview image.

    • Use this set or this set of CU Custom Tag Shapes from Shapes4Free. Here is a 2 minute video on YouTube that explains the basics of using the Shape Tool in Photoshop!

    • Here is a adorable set of Mason Jar tags available on DesignBundles.net for free with a CU license. These would be so cute to modify for your kits.

    • From RawPixel.com. You can get 5 free images each day, all CU, but you do need to give an attribution when you post the item you create with their resources.

Day Seven's Challenge is to make some tags for your growing kit. Use the "recipes" in today's Scraptorial to inspire and guide you, or go out on you own and let your Muses run wild! I will be most anxious to see what you make, my designing friends. smiley

Such fancy tags. I like the glitter balls on the tree (glitter!! smiley LOL) and the flowers and speckles on your "&." Compared to your examples, my tags have all been really boring!

Did you see I used your radial gradient idea on my one round tag? Always borrowing ideas learning! I probably went overboard as I am wont to do at times (ALL times) but I had the goal to get a list of techniques we had already talked about in other Scraptorials shown on different tags, so I was on a mission and the more techniques I got on each tag, the less tags I needed to do overall. And I was having fun working in PS without having to make a cup a tea to pass the time every time I saved a PNG! New computer is faaaaaaaaaaast. smiley I timed the old one . . . it took 10-15 minutes to open PS depending on how much stuff I had loaded up. The new one took FOUR SECONDS! It's absolutely glorious. I was sitting here not thinking, and waiting for it to save something this afternoon, and then I realized it had already saved it before I could even register the status bar I am usually staring at and staring at as it slowing inches its progress towards 99%! Thought for a minute I had fat-fingered it and not really saved, but it was so fast, I must blinked and missed the whole process!

Thanks so much for the kind words, Tricia. And for helping with questions in the different posts while I was resting. (I didn't really get much rest as the computer install was a bit stressful but the results are worth any hassle I went through and then some. I can rest next weekend.)

And now Desert caught up...

I did see the radial smiley ...I'm glad you got some rest and that the stress was worth the hassle & the upgrade smiley

And you are welcome for the answered questions. I do try to be helpful when I have time. Everyone here has been so nice, so pay-it-forward!

Your new computer sounds amazing. I had to close PSE several times yesterday because it was sooooooo bogged down!

Oh....Tricia, those are such CUTE tags......oh I love them! smiley

Not exactly thrilled with the brown tag, but I'm really happy with the other two.

"Merry Christmas" font is Farmhouse.

Amazing tuts, many thanks Annette Marie. Such beautiful tags, @ Tricia and @Lisel!!
I'd second Tricia, your tags are little works of art, Annette Marie! All the work in the tuts and tags.... it really looks a lot like Christmas.... smiley
I used these DS assets: 94769, 289732, 285305, 77604
This is pretty straight forward, I used a chalk stroke style from Adobe, simplified it and made it a tad wider and more transparent, and put Elif's shadows on it, that's all smiley . Font is Couture.
Now I see I don't have a string, but I'll add that later smiley

Once again, thanks for another super tut Annette. I am having a lot of fun and learning lots.
Here is my first tag. All my own work. Found a tut on letterpress and applied what I learnt.
More to come.

Here are my tags. Must still learn how to put the string or chain through the hole.

Your angel tags are so cute and so Christmas-y. I love that you got the pine bough texture in all the different colors. Really neat effect to tie them to the papers and kit, in general. Absolutely precious, Tricia! (And displayed so prettily so we can really see and appreciate all the details.)

The new computer is the BOMB. I didn't realize how slow everything was, until I sat down and took a spin on the new one.

Thanks for being helpful. I so appreciate it very much! smiley

Gail, your motorcycle-themed tags are AWESOME. I love the de-bossing you did with the text and the one picture. That is such a cool technique. Good for you figuring it out and using it on your fancy-schmancy tag collection. smiley Love 'em!

Did you mean you want to learn how to make the string/chain or find pre-made ones and make them look like they are going through the tags holes? The second one is easy. Find a resource--chain or string. Some great strings here on DS. Then just drag it onto the PS canvas with the tag. You want it in the layer above the tag. Adjust the scale. Edit >Transform > Scale. Drag it into position and then when you are satisfied with the size and placement, with a small, hard-edged eraser brush, erase the bits you want to appear under the tag.

Here is a search at DS for PNG or PSD tags/string for tags. I didn't see any chains that would work when I searched, but Raw Pixel or Vecteezy might have one you could snag.

Oh, the pink and green beside each other is so pretty! And your tags turned out so cool, Bina. (Are you working through your lunch hour again?) You're welcome for the Scraptorial and bless your generous heart for saying such kind things about my tag examples. I really had a bunch of fun trying to smoosh as many techniques onto a few tags as possible! And thank you for the resources you used and for mentioning Adobe has a chalk stroke. Gotta check all those things out. I always get the best ideas from you! Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful creations with us and for making time to play with tag-making!

I think your tag and journal card are both perfectly lovely. If you truly aren't happy with the tag, let it rest, and come back to it with fresh eyes another day. Your subconscious might have been working on the issue while you were doing other things, and you just might come up with an idea for making adjustments to make it more pleasing to you . . . but I think it is pretty. I love the word art, the distressed paper and that wee little bow is SWEET! The post card turned out really neat as well. Love the font you used for "Merry Christmas" and the stamp and cancellation are such wonderful details. Really nice creations for this challenge, Lisel. So happy you found some time to get creative and share your results with us. Excellent job, my friend!

Now I've seen the lovelies uploaded by the ever-enterprising 'Scraptorial' gang (missing a few but sure they'll "ketch-up"! smiley ), so here's my contribution: Set1 - a bit real-time, & Set2 - vintage. I had such a headache with the holes & strings that finally I just switched my brain off & took shortcuts wherever possible!

In Set2, for the hang "string", I've used a few of Marisa's stuff.

Hhmmm....looking at the above images smiley , I think I should probably change the shadowing if I want to upload to the Commons...What do you think? Advice on improvement is requested please smiley

Maybe have the shadows fall to the bottom right?
Like, the strings shadows, etc. smiley

Tricia: Those angels are so cute!

Lisel: I am absolutely LOVING that postcard!

Gail: My daughter-in-law has a motorcycle, so I will definitely be snagging those tags! I know of two ways to loop string through a hole. The first is to use the eraser tool/push tool on the string. The second uses the lasso tool. In Paintshop Pro, I'll zoom in on the image to get in close to see the pixels. Draw around the edges of the hole and the border of the tag, but just where the string overlaps the tag. On the string layer, hit delete. If need be, I then use the push tool (unsure if Photoshop has that, haven't noticed) to give the string going through the hole a more rounded look.

Chitra: Impressive! You did a lot of work on those.

Thanks Christina. Will try it.

You're welcome! Let me know if you figured it out. I should mention that with the eraser tool, at least in PSP, you need to play around with the settings to get it exactly right.

Yes, Lisel...maybe you're right! I should try & change before uploading to the Commons. Thanks Lisel!

Yeah...a whole couple hours!! But the string going through the whole bit is tricky for me...I will try to better my method when I have a little more time. Thanks, Christina!

Great tags, btw!

I know all about spending a couple of hours creating goodies! Sometimes you just get in the zone and can't stop, and want to keep going to perfect your designs. It's worth it in the end, though, the satisfying feeling you get at creating something truly special. smiley Yep, string through a hole is tricky; it's one of those things that takes patience and practice. And thank you for complimenting my tags!

Here's my tag. I used Elif Sahin's twine here.

Not as pretty as all of yours, but I'm happy(ish) with it.

Also thank you so much Annette for the time you have spent on this! Every time I think I'm going to quit and get work done, I take a peek at the next step and can't help myself!

Oh, that's so cute, Jill!

Thank you Christina!

You're welcome, Chitra! You always have such cute creations!
