Scraptorial - The Monthly Show & Tell Challenge (Jan 2023)

Hellooooooooooo again, my Designing Darlings! (Sorry I am wee bit late with this but yesterday was crazy. I was just sitting down to do my Scrappy Tuesday thing and my husband--who had gone to the Urgent Care Clinic first thing in the a.m. with heart palpitations--ended up getting admitted to the hospital! He is fine now, but I spent the day at the hospital lending moral support and neglected to post when I finally got home. Waiting around and being supportive is exhausting, am I right? I walked into the house, fell on the couch and didn't move until morning!)

The good news is--I had tons of "Dreaming & Scheming" time on my hands as I waited around my husband's bedside and I came up with something I hope we can do once a month or so and will be a bunch of fun. The Show & Tell Challenge! smiley

The challenge is open to anyone who wants to play--whether you are just starting out or an expert designer--all are welcome! The basic item I share each month will be commercial-use or public domain. You can change it up in any fashion that appeals to you . . . bling it, texture it, filter it, re-color it, add it to a cluster, use it for part of a word art, make it into a patterned paper, draw it, make it into a brush . . . anything goes. Host it at your favorite image-hosting site and share your results back here with us so we can "oooooooh" and "aaaaaaah." Tell us in a full-blown Scraptorial how you made your creation, or just give us a sentence or two or skip that part entirely, if sharing your process doesn't appeal to you. (Some people like to have secrets! I get it!) I am thinking I will make a poll the next Tuesday so we can vote on "Best of Show" and maybe even make a little Braggin' Badge the Winner could share in their description when they share the winning item in The Commons or their blog or RIGHT HERE so others can enjoy their creation. (Tell me what you think about that--yay or nay! I love competing for prizes . . . even pretend sparkly bragging points, but I know some people don't care for it. I will go with the majority on that aspect of this challenge.)

January's Show & Tell item is here. Right-click save. I have modified the edges slightly from the original download and trimmed it to 2310 by 2369.

You can also download an unmodified, untrimmed version of this item here directly from Pixabay.com, if you desire.

Oh, I hope everyone has FUN with this! Ask away, if you have any questions. Oh, one more thing . . . make as many entries as you like! smiley

ETA: 1/17/2023

smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley It's time to VOTE! smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley

Anyone is welcome to vote in this poll. There are 29 entries to choose from.
Scroll through all the entries below and note the entry number given to your favorite response.
Tick that same number on the poll and click "vote." One vote per person. Voting will close in one week.
Thanks to everyone who takes the time to vote and good luck to everyone who entered.
Each and every entry was FABULOUS!

First off, I can't see the pic you posted. smiley

What an interesting challenge, Annette! Very cool idea to have us work with the same graphic! As everyone has their own style and way of doing things, the end results will end up diverse and unique. I'm game for a vote on "Best of Show".

Can't wait to try and here all of your cool ideas! Glad your husband is better, and, hospitals are exhausting!

Ok... so I am going to try my hand at this one! Wish me luck!lol

For this first paper I simply copied the flower many times over a texturized orange (sampled from the flower) background. I then put it in indirect light mode. To give it a little more grunge, I used a lighter tone of orange with a paint splatter brush.

For the next two I was inspired by Van Gogh paintings. On the first one I simply enlarged the flower as to cover the entire background and applied a oil painting filter over the flower. On the second one I cut out the petals and applied a blue background sampled from the Starry Night painting.

If anyone wants the files, I put them in my Blog and in my Google Drive

BTW, this is the first time I ever tried designing anything...lol

Hi, Christina . . . thanks for letting me know the picture went AWOL. I am out of practice posting! smiley I am so stoked you think it will be interesting to see how different people work with the same asset. That was my thought, too AND I hope we get lots of ideas from each other in the process. Thanks for voting on the competition aspect, too. I think I will probably try it and see how it goes.

Can't wait to see what you come up with! smiley

Sarah! Hellooooooooooooooo! smiley I am so excited you are excited to have a go at this challenge--WOO HOO! I am anxious to see what you come up with and thanks so much for the kind words regarding my husband. I appreciate it! smiley

Hi, Mariana! It is so nice to meet you and yessssssssssssssssssssss, so thrilled you want to join in! I am happy-dancing with delight! I would wish you luck, but I see you have already shared an entry and did not need any luck from me to make some very pretty things. Thanks so much for playing! smiley

Oh, WOW! I love all three of your challenge entries, Mariana. Are you sure this is your first time designing? smiley Your flower-patterned paper is so pretty and bright. I love the splattered texture you've added. And the painting effect on the "Van Gogh" papers is super cool. I really like the surprise pop of bright blue on the second one. Very unexpected and that is always fun. GOOD JOB!

Mariana: It's nice to see new people try their hand at designing. For your first try ever designing something, you jumped right out of the gate and nailed it! Awesome papers! I particularly like the middle one, the close up of the flower. That's really lovely.

Annette: Believe me, this was a really cool idea, having us all use the same thing to see what we come up with. Like I said, we all have different styles, so it's going to be intriguing and so much fun! Yes, exactly...try the poll out and see what happens. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, it doesn't.

Everyone: I already posted mine to the Commons. Or should I have waited?

Wintry glitter flower.

Spring Flower.

Spring Flora

Annette, what an interesting idea! I'll have to have a think about this!

Still inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night, I got the flower and through many copied layers transformed it a few times with the twirl filter. I thought it needed the blue to get the real Van Gogh feeling, so I added some blue twirls as well. At the end I applied the Oil paint effect a few times to get the texture just right and ended up with this paper here... The flower has become unrecognizable, but I do promise it is there, all twirled up...lol

It is also in my Drive Files for download

Annette, thanks, coming to give it a bash. glad your hubby is ok.
Lovely takes on the flower by all the other ladies.

Here are 3 different styles I have played with so far. With our current load shedding schedule we sit for between 6-8 hour with no power, so I need to do something quickly, Will see what else I can do.

Used a tut by Nannette Dalton to convert a photo to a sketch and then a pastel color in. Applied a solid colour adjustment layer and used the color burn mode.

Same technique as above, but then ran a glowing edge filter.

Extracted the white petals and added a solid color adjust layer with a ripple edge filter. Then ran the oil paint filter on the whole flower.

Thanks for the inspiration for this paper, especially @Mariana

Wow, what a stressful time. I'm glad your husband is all right!!
Thank you so much for cleaning up the edges Annette!! And thanks for the fun challenge.

Here is my contribution, colored to match my 23 Jan DC:

I sharpened up some blurry areas, created layers, re-colored...then shrank to 4 inches because it was huge...that is still too big for a flower, but I wanted to give people room to work.
You have my permission to use the layers as a CU graphic.

@Gail, I really like the texture on the green one, with the oil paint filter. Great selection of flowers. Looks like you had fun smiley

@Sarah, good idea on the spring frame. That is a very springy looking flower.

Gail: Nice job with the filter usage. Filters are superb for changing things up to make them your own. The flowers all look completely different. Out of curiosity, which program are you using?

Sarah: Great job recoloring. I like how you made the flower the "i" in spring.

Some lovely entries here! I have recoloured the flower and also used it to make some papers, but it's nearly 1am on Sunday morning here, and I still have to write up what I did and then post to Imgur before I can show you what I made! So, I'm off to bed now, and will hopefully get all that done later today, so that I can take part in the show and tell.

@Mariana, thanks for sharing your great papers!

@Christina, I always love a bit of glitter, the button center on your second flower is great...& nice colors!

@Mariana, what program has a twirl filter? That is so fun! Great color choices smiley

Photoshop... but I am calling it twirl as a personal translation... mine is all in portuguese!lol

Thanks Mariana, someday I hope to have photoshop. For now I use PSE.

Hi Christina. I use Photoshop. I am busy trying to master Illustrator at the moment as well.

Here are a few more various of the flower. I will be loading them into the commons as well.

On this element, I used the polar co-ordinate filter, wave and twirl filter. Then added a solid color adjustment layer.

Used the flower from above without the color adjustment layer and made pattern's for a background paper.

@Mariana - Love your Van Gogh papers so much!

@Gail - Love your twirl take on it

gail - as a fan of twirl filter, I loved your twirl papers!!!!!!

Tricia, PSE has a twirl filter...

Filter > Distort > Twirl

These are all fantastic, and I am absolutely in awe of everyone's creativity and imagination! Love, Love, Love them all!

My entries are below, in a loooooooooooooong post!
