Using deviantART for Digital Scrapbooking (a Blog alternative)

Since we've been talking about download tracking and file hosting, I thought I would throw this out there as an alternative, in case anyone is interested...

DeviantART actually has a submission category for digital scrapbooking (and a small-ish group of contributors): Resources & Stock Images / Designs & Patterns / Scrapbooking. You can upload your zipped file and also a preview image for it. You can also specify a Creative Commons license. DeviantART will take care of the file storage - and anyone can download, even if they don't have an account (though I think they'd have to have an account to leave a comment, I can't remember on that one) - and I've never had a problem with storage limits or viruses or the site being blocked by web filters. DeviantART will also track how many times your pages have been viewed and how many times your files have been downloaded - users can also "like" and "favourite" your works, adding your page link to their own bookmark files. And for those who don't want to fuss with a blog, it is really simple and requires very little maintenance to have.

dA also has an option for journaling, which is like a blog post - and if you decided to subscribe, there are more customization options.

It DOES have ads, but I have found them to be not too bad over the years (non-existent if you have an ad-block app on your browser), and they DO actually pay attention to what ads are displayed and will remove them if users find them objectionable. But, I've never thought that they confused any functions of the site. smiley

And, before I forget, dA also lets you remove items/art from public display and put them into a storage kind of limbo for as long as you like. The files are still hosted on their site, so you can re-display them later if you want.

For an example, this is one of my items: HERE.

I DO maintain a blog, because I think they're fun, but I also keep a DeviantART account, too, as an alternate and a backup. It's an option that I think gets overlooked sometimes, so I just thought I'd throw it out there, in case it might be a good fit for someone. smiley

Mollie, I didn't realise that it was even possible to do this on DeviantART! Thanks for the info.

You're welcome! smiley

And, I forgot to mention: If anyone wants to explore using dA and wants any help or has any questions, I'd be happy to help. I've had an account with them for a while now so I know my way around decently.

thanks for the tip, mollie! i haven't even considered that option, but makes sense!

Mollie .. I have an account as well, but that's as far as it went lol ..... I keep meaning to go back and something always gets in the way ..... too much to do and too much to play with lol

mi Damuy interesante el tema yo abri cuenta en da me quedo por aqui ya te sigo en da Molli gracias

Wow... I used to be a paying member of DA a LOONG time ago when I did stock photos and photo manipulation, lol... I might have to fire the account back up. I didn't think anyone used DA anymore!

Nicole .... DA is awesome ... I love it ... and it's still very viable and keeps up with technology ... that doesn't always happen on many of the sites

I'll have to pop back on there and check it out again, lol!

Thanks, Mollie! I love checking Deviant out for resources and inspiration, but I didn't consider that it has its own file storage capabilities. It's a fun community, too, that I enjoy being a part of to the small degree that I am.

Mahalo Molly!

I had made an account there many moons ago and totally forgot about it. I shall have to go back there once I got something worth while to share.

I have had some fun looking at Deviantart for inspiration, plus a very good freebie source for personal backgrounds. The "textures" are endless with all the folk experimenting with watercolors, etc. I have bookmarked several artists because I will definitely go back to their pages when I am looking for something unique.

I love DeviantArt! And I really like the community, mostly very friendly and inspiring and encouraging too. Years ago I had an account and used it a lot, the last few years I've been just checking it out every now and then, but a few weeks ago I started posting again on there and I really like it. I also post my drawings on there, and there are so many great artists on there, so for me it's not exclusively for digital scrapbooking.
