Are there any Photoshop CC books you would recommend that are more graphic designer focused than photography focused. .

The problem I am having is find a beginner's photoshop cc that focuses on more graphic design rather than photography. The book I have now is 398 pages all of which are based on editing/repairing photos. What I am interested in is a book or books that focus more on, the ability to make layouts using the tools more in a graphic design way. So preferably written by a graphics person or a digital scrapbooking person. I want to learn about layers in depth, specifically how to modify them, and tools required to do so.

I want to learn how to work with layout templates so I can attempt some layouts using them.

Any suggestions on where to look would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Curious to see if anyone as any suggestions for a book. The main problem with books is that they tend to be out of date before they are published. Video tutorials on youtube will be more up to date and in general are easier to make because trying to describe the process in text is a lot harder than just showing it (my experience).

Also, you don't need a whole book to learn how to use a layout template. It's basically just knowing how to use a clipping mask, and how to move around elements. I have a video here about using a layout template.

Let me know if you have any questions after watching the video.

Thanks,
I actually followed along with your video, it took lots of tries, but I got it done, the video was perfect.

It seems there are some queries that don't address things, like the template one.

My newest one is how to use the masks that photoshop doesn't make. Lots of designers put separate masks in the bundle, but I have no idea how to use them in photoshop. Is there a video for that?

Go to Photoshop itself for tutorials as well .. if you have an Adobe plan then there are other avenues open to you as well ... take a look at the Adobe site or google it

Thanks, I think I do have an adobe plan, but not sure.

Let me know what questions you have left and I can see if I can make another tutorial. Always looking for things to cover.

Hey Leslie,

you use these masks the same way you use the photo or paperplaceholders that Marisa used in her tutorial, you clip a photo or a paper to that mask. So you put the mask you choose from a designers kit onto your LO, put a photo (or a paper) above it, rightclick on the photo and chose 'create clippingmask' and the photo will be clipped to the mask. Most times it is better not to use a shadow on these masks so the borders are soft.
Here is one of mine where you can see a mask used:

I hope this helps

Thanks so much.

Thanks so much. Things seem to come up as I try them. I think you did a tutorial or blog post on using alpha's and alpha sheet in layouts in Photoshop. I can't seem to find it in the tutorial section, Can you send me a link to it if it is there? Thanks.

Use alpha or alpha sheet is so simple that you don't need a tutorial.
When you have letters in separate png file you paste letters you need directly to your page, when you have sheet, you cut individual letter from it, and paste to page.

Oh, I thought maybe there would be an easier way to line them up. Thanks for answering, I appreciate it.

No, it must be a font file to do this. Alpha sheet or separate png file are normal objects.

I have a tutorial here on aligning elements.

Marisa to the rescue. Thanks so much.

I must be doing something wrong, or have some setting messed up because mine just end up on top of each other no matter which option I select. I was trying to line up B R E but they all end up one on top of the other. I notice everyone else who did the tutorial got it to work, so it must be me.

I think you're clicking the wrong button. Make sure all the layers you want to distribute are selected, and then click one of the "distribute" buttons. Screenshot here.

Thanks, works great now. I love the way your workspace is set up. It looks so convenient.
