Stroking a Path Problems?

Stroking a Path Problems?

There are so many amazing things that can be done by "Stroking a Path" in PS but it almost never works for me. Something is always grayed out. Anyone else? Any solutions? The path is grayed out or the stoke path is grayed out or if you make a shape is grayed out. Grrrrrrrr

are you working in 8-bit or 16-bit... some filters can not be used in 16-bit, maybe stroking a path is the same? Just a guess...
