way late to this but Marisa's directions are similar to what I do in PSP (i use PSP9 FWIW).
after you have your hollow alpha chosen/letters typed, create another raster layer. return to the alpha layer and click inside each letter with magic wand.
go to selections > modify > expand > expand by 1.
selections > modify > invert.
return to the blank layer and either fill the letters or place in your background. hit delete key.
