Extension webp

Hi Jordan,

I have a question regarding the new file extension . webp from Digitalscrapbook.com and other websites.

When I want to download a jpg image for the purpose of scraplifting and load it into my graphics program, it does not work. I have to make a screenshot first and then crop it. What is this new technology and how can I download graphics with it?

Hello Doska!

This is a new file extension developed by Google that helps reduce the size of images without losing quality for the web. The goal is to reduce the loading time of web pages and improve the user experience (it's so annoying when an image takes at least 10 seconds to display x) ). It's a new standard, that's why it's more and more widespread smiley

What software and what version are you using? Depending on the software, it is sometimes necessary to use a plug-in to open and save images in .webp format.

Good morning Anne Laure,

thank you very much for your quick answer. I still work with the Photo Impact from Corel ( unfortunately no longer developed but still work on WIN 10.
Would you have a recommendation for such a plug in?

I did not know this software. I searched on the internet, it seems that there is a plugin (it is mentioned on this forum) but I couldn't find it. smiley

Alternatively, you can change the extension of a file online and then open it with your software. For example: https://www.online-convert.com/
You can change the language of the site, at the bottom right smiley

Hi Anne- Laurie,

this is a great link that I have immediately bookmarked in my Designer help folder, thank you very much.
Maybe Jordan, when he has time again, says something about it.

If your using Firefox browser there is a great extention you can use called WebP/Avif Image Converter. Instead of using the save as you just use the convert button with it and it automatically saves as your choice jpg or png. I've been using it for over a year and it works great.

Thank you Jackie, it works, hurray smiley

@Doska, it looks like others have already answered this question for me. smiley

As others have mentioned, the webP image format helps our website load faster, and you can convert webP images using a number of online image converters, for example https://cloudconvert.com/webp-converter or the WebP / Avif image converter browser extension (also available for Firefox).

Thank you Jordan for responding anyway.
Yes, I loaded one of the offers into my Firefox browser and it works. smiley
