Oh, I forgot to mention that with the thicker string, often times I also add one last layer set to the overlay blending mode at 100% opacity. With a low opacity soft brush, I paint on some of the additional colors in the kit. It doesn't need to be exact...just so that the string has some color variation.

@Kristina, I usually add two clipped layers. Fill them with whatever color you'd like the string to be. I set the bottom layer to overlay at 100% opacity. Then I set the top layer to color burn. The opacity will vary depending on the color...and sometimes you won't need it at all. It just gives a little extra color boost. I usually start at 40% and then go from there as to whether it needs more, less, or none at all.
To finish things off, I typically merge the layers and do an auto contrast. You need to watch carefully that the color is still true to the palette. Most times it's just fine. It seems to make the string seem a bit less one dimensional.
