About Me
New to Digital Scrapbooking, just started in 2019, want to make a record of family stories before my mother passes away. My dad died in 2016. I currently live in Canada but was born and raised in New Zealand, and emigrated to Canada upon marrying my Canadian spouse. Home Country - lets see - New Zealand or Canada? Which to choose? Most of my photos will be from NZ, but any pics of my son will be from Canada. MY IP Address will say that I am in Canada which is fine. My mother and sister are still back in NZ so I will make my home country as NZ for now. For Facebook, I dont check it every day - I am not addicted to FB, and I use a different name for privacy. My image is myself as a child - aged about 2 or 3 years old

The Mona Lisa is considered to be the most famous painting in the world.
Why is that? Is it due to that enigmatic smile she wears? Or is it for some other reason?
On Monday 22 August, 1911 the Mona Lisa was stolen right out of its frame from the Louvre Museum. It was not until 26 hours later before the discovery od the theft was noticed and the alarm raised. That is because paintings were often removed to be photographed and/or cleaned. It would take close to 2 years before the painting was found and returned to its home in the Louvre. It was this theft that did much to raise the profile of the Mona Lisa and make it truly famous.
As to who stole the Mona Lisa? That was an Italian man named Vincenzo Peruggia. He had this funny idea that paintings by Italian artists should be returned home to Italy before men like Napoleon Bonaparte could steal them.
On Monday 22 August 1911, the museum was closed to the public. One theory says that Peruggia hid in a closet on the Sunday night and thus was able to freely walk around the museum the following morning. But the more likely scenario is that he walked into the Museum on that Monday morning to do his job. Peruggia had been hired to help make the thick glass cases for many of the Louvre’s paintings. At that time in 1911, the Mona Lisa still had no glass covering for security.
After the Painting was stolen, one of the suspects was Pablo Picasso, because he received some small stolen items from the Louvre. But NOT the Mona Lisa.
In 1913, Peruggia contacted an art dealer and tried to sell the Mona Lisa on the condition that said painting was shown in the Uffizi gallery in Florence, and that it never ever be returned to France. The dealer contacted the police and Peruggia was eventually arrested.
The public went wild at the news of finding the Mona Lisa. The painting was displayed at the Uffizi and throughout Italy before it was returned to France on Dec. 30, 1913.
The Mona Lisa became world-famous because of this theft. Before this theft, the painting was not particularly well known. Her face was printed in newspapers world wide during the 2 years she was missing. Thus her face is now one of the most recognizable images in the world today.
The Mona Lisa is actually quite small, as seen in these photos. It is barely 2 and a half feet high by 1 and 3/4 feet wide. (30 inches by 21 inches)
