About Me
New to Digital Scrapbooking, just started in 2019, want to make a record of family stories before my mother passes away. My dad died in 2016. I currently live in Canada but was born and raised in New Zealand, and emigrated to Canada upon marrying my Canadian spouse. Home Country - lets see - New Zealand or Canada? Which to choose? Most of my photos will be from NZ, but any pics of my son will be from Canada. MY IP Address will say that I am in Canada which is fine. My mother and sister are still back in NZ so I will make my home country as NZ for now. For Facebook, I dont check it every day - I am not addicted to FB, and I use a different name for privacy. My image is myself as a child - aged about 2 or 3 years old

My sister introduced me to a new Story about the ANZACS yesterday. One I had never heard before but this is a TRUE story!!
This is about a young man from Otago, New Zealand (my family's home province) named Alexander Craig Aitken, who enlisted in 1915 and was sent to Gallipoli. He picked up a violin along the way and would often play music to help his fellow soldiers. The violin survived battles at Gallipoli and the Somme. But then Alex was wounded, and later discharged and sent home.
After Alexander was injured, the violin was abandoned, but someone else rescued it, took it to a music professional in London who repaired the violin and gave it new strings. The violin was then sent by mail (and ship) all the way back to New Zealand.
Alexander donated the violin to his old high school (the same HS that my father would later attend) before going on to a brilliant career as a mathematics professor and later Dean of the Maths department, at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He died in 1967.
Now I want to do his family tree and genealogy!!!!
This story has been made into a childrens book, which is how my sister discovered it. She read the book to her kindergarten children on Friday (23 April 2021) which is ANZAC weekend in New Zealand and Australia. She later showed me this book in our weekly Skype chat on Saturday. ANZAC day is on Sunday 25 April 2021, but the Monday after (26 April 2021) is a statutory holiday, because this holiday has been "monday-ized".
