May 7, 2014 - The highlight of our last full day in Venice is visiting Basilica San Marco. Next to it in San Marco Square is a complex clock dating from the 16th Century. The Basilica was started in the 9th century when the body of St. Mark was brought to Venice. Through the centuries, it was periodically rebuilt due to fires and redecorated in newer styles, and more restoration work is currently underway. The exterior is rich with marbles walls, columns, statues, and mosaics. The interior is breath-taking with its gold tile mosaics which cover the ceiling and upper walls. Floors are intricate stone mosaics. Sharon goes upstairs to view the museum and step out on the second level above the entrances by the bronze horses, with a great view of the bell tower. In the museum are the original four huge bronze horses of St. Mark which have been dated to the 4th Century B.C. and were brought to Venice from Constantinople in 1204 following the 4th Crusade.
